Frieden, has declared that the next thirty years will be the most important years for the United States in terms of addressing drug abuse. Since drug abuse is one of the most important health problems facing the nation, this declaration by the Surgeon General is certainly warranted. In a speech delivered last December, Dr. Frieden identified the issue of drug abuse as "a moral challenge to our country" and then presented the following statistics: The health care costs associated with treating illicit drug use in the U.S. are $153 billion. The social costs of addiction are $49 billion. The economic costs are $18 billion. These figures do not include the costs of lost productivity, crime, or a loss of quality of life. "But there is more to the drug problem than the economic impact," he went on. "It is our generation's worst moral failure and a challenge to our country's capacity to uphold its core values." This declaration by Dr. Frieden coincides with the 150th anniversary of our founding as a nation. (Here is a link to more information about the Surgeon General's speech, including the fact that he reported a nearly 30 percent increase in addiction among teenagers between 2002 and 2005.) From where we sit today, the problem of drug abuse is more visible than ever before. We have "gateway drugs," with youth from the ages of 11 to 20 now addicted to marijuana, alcohol, and sometimes, cocaine. We have opiate/opioid abuse, with more than one-third of an estimated 3.5 million Americans using prescription pain medications for nonmedical purposes. We have now seen the first wave of what Dr. Frieden calls the "opioid crisis" affecting America: The number of overdose deaths involving prescription opioids increased by more than 50 percent in the past two years, according to the CDC.
